The Federal Court of Appeal has rejected the Sierra Club of Canada’s application to overturn the approval of the Bay du Nord project.
The organization, which is against the project for environmental reasons, calls it a “deeply disappointing decision,” but says the fight is “far from over.”
Executive Director Gretchen Fitzgerald says they will consider their options, including whether to seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Provincial energy minister pleased with decision
Meanwhile, Energy Minister Lloyd Parrott is pleased with the outcome.
He thinks it highlights the capabilities of the offshore and how they can move projects forward in a safe and sustainable way.
Gllobal events not a green light for oil production says professor
Angela Carter, a professor in political science and a Canada Research Chair in equitable energy transition, also spent the week at the conference. She says when the price of oil goes up, such as now with the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, the industry sees it as a license to ramp up production.
She believes just the opposite should be happening.
“If you look at how Europeans are interpreting those spikes, they are accelerating their mission to get off oil and gas altogether,” says Carter.
