A state of emergency has been declared by the Town of Labrador City as wildfires continue to spread in western Labrador.
A new fire is burning about 8 kilometres west of the community, north of the Trans-Labrador Highway and west of the Walsh River area. The blaze has forced the evacuation of several areas, including cabins near Walsh River, the Duley Park Campground, and the Tamarack Golf Course.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says evacuees are being directed to Menihek High School. Drivers are being asked to stay patient, follow all instructions from emergency personnel, and avoid stopping or exiting vehicles along affected routes.
In a statement, the Premier says the province is closely monitoring the wildfire situation in Labrador, including the fire near Walsh River, which has already forced the evacuation of about 120 people.
The Provincial Government’s Emergency Operations Centre has moved to Level 2 activation, with all departments working alongside municipal officials and emergency responders.
Four water bombers are currently supporting firefighting efforts in Labrador, along with additional helicopters and ground crews. Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is also monitoring its operations in Labrador West.
The Premier says the priority remains public safety, thanking emergency personnel for their ongoing work and urging residents to follow all evacuation orders and rely on official updates.
There are several other wildfires burning across Labrador, as well as one on the Island, though officials say none of the others currently pose a threat to communities.
VOCM News will continue to follow the situation and bring updates as they become available.
