The provincial government has partnered with the Nunatsiavut government to develop 20 transitional care beds in that region.
Health Minister Lela Evans was in Nain Thursday for the announcement.
Nearly $3-million has been set aside for the project in the provincial budget.
Government says the beds will provide culturally safe care for people closer to home, and help ease pressure on the Labrador Health Centre in Goose Bay so that acute care services are more accessible for those that need them.
Evans says how and where the beds will be developed will be determined through consultations with community partners.
She says there are many stories of people having to go to southern Labrador, or further down onto the island, for care – meaning they don’t get to see their loved ones. Evans hopes the new transitional care beds will help with that situation.
