The town of Small Point-Broad Cove, Blackhead, Adams Cove, the only incorporated municipality in the affected area, lost 15 per cent of its municipal tax base in the fires, and is struggling to keep services going.
Mayor Curtis Delaney is seeking financial assistance from the provincial government to address the issue.
Finance Minister Craig Pardy says the province is doing what it can to help.
He says the province has been working with the town for the last 6 months or so, with a departmental accountant to address its financial situation.
“We know where we are and where the town is financially” said Pardy. “We made the commitment that we would… help them out with the shortfall that they would have experienced as a result of the fires. We’ve committed to that.”
He expects to settle on an amount in the coming weeks.
