The provincial government says it is working closely with local colleges to prepare for a massive influx of skilled workers.
The new Churchill Falls agreement is expected to bring thousands of jobs to Newfoundland and Labrador, with hiring priority given to Indigenous groups, as well as residents of Labrador and the island.
Jobs Minister Lin Paddock says while the government is already collaborating with post-secondary institutions, it also plans to inject more into the high school system to get younger students interested in the trades.
“So there’s starting to be more investments there with a focus on trades, to encourage the youth to look to the trades.
“I’m confident that they will. Like, I know the same in my district, Baie Verte-Green Bay. A lot of the youth now are looking to the trades, where they haven’t been over the past couple decades.”
