Ottawa’s Atlantic Fisheries Fund has been renewed for another five years.
Over $300-million has been set aside for the funding stream, which will go towards projects in each of the Atlantic provinces. It is cost shared with 60 per cent of the money coming from the federal government, and the rest from the provinces.
Ottawa says eligible projects must fall within four pillars: market diversification, innovation, infrastructure, and science partnerships.
Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson says the funding will help harvesters diversify their catch to adjust to the ongoing trade war with the United States.
“So it is tailored to the realities of the various aspects of the sector (with tariffs). For some harvesters it’s going to need to be at a very basic level in terms of how do I cope with this, you know, how do I adjust to this reality. In other instances it will be much more of expanding on work that they’re already doing.”
