Weather got in the way of a protest in St. John’s Saturday afternoon but people against turning a park-like area of the Battery into a residential development vow to be back.
A private company bought the land with the objective of building a couple of dozen homes, mostly townhouses, on it. The project is winding its way through the formal city process.
Erin Callahan St. John, one of the organizers of the weekend rally, is calling on the city and the province to step up and protect an area that should be protected. If anything, St. John would like to see the area, known as Limeville, be declared a world heritage site or be set aside for public use.
“This could be a UNESCO site, a space for a library, a community centre, a park. You do not see trees like this anywhere else on Signal Hill,” says St. John.
“We don’t want a subdivision in Limeville.”
The makeup date for the rally is November 8.
