A big portion of what’s left of the bulk carrier Baltic III is now on land as the salvage operation in Cedar Cove comes another step closer to wrapping up.
Resolve Marine has pulled the bow and midship sections of the wreck to shore, and the stern has also been moved closer to shore.
Cutting and removal of the vessel continues, with the amount of metal removed to-date at more than 7,400 tonnes – equivalent to 68 per cent of the vessel’s total bulk.
The Canadian Coast Guard has noticed some sheen in the water at Cedar Cove, with some oiled vegetation and debris, as well as fresh tar balls, and stains in addition to three dead birds.
The cause of the birds’ demise has not yet been confirmed.
The Coast Guard warns that more sheening may occur as weather continues to deteriorate. It is working with Environment and Climate Change to conduct pollution surveillance on the water and from the air as weather allows.
