The RCMP is warning the public about a new scam making the rounds, where fraudsters are pretending to be police officers.
RCMP Headquarters have received reports from across the country indicating that people are receiving calls from spoofed numbers that look like legitimate RCMP detachments.
The scammers claim the person is a victim of a financial crime and attempt to get their banking information. They also ask victims to send details to a fake email address ending in “rcmp.gov,” which looks similar to the official email used by the Mounties.
The RCMP reminds the public that officers will never ask for money over the phone, and you should never give out personal information to unsolicited callers or emails.
If you believe you have fallen victim to this scam, you are asked to contact your local police detachment.
