Debate is ongoing in the House of Assembly on changes to the Social Workers Act.
Government contends that the changes will strengthen public safety and protect people seeking care.
One of the key changes, according to government, will allow the College of Social Workers to establish a new Registered Clinical Social Worker category for those who engage in clinical practice in a private setting.
Clinical social workers will be required to have their masters degree, proven clinical experience, and to pass a clinical exam.
Government says there are people currently working in private practice that do not meet the proposed requirements of the new designation, and a “transition plan” is being developed with the College to ensure they can continue to provide service to their clients.
