The province’s health authority is warning the public of multiple reports in the community of fentanyl contamination of cocaine in eastern Newfoundland and the Labrador region.
NLHS warns users and those around them to be aware of unexpected drowsiness or difficulty waking following cocaine use.
Cocaine is a stimulant that increases alertness and energy, however fentanyl is a strong opioid that can cause overdose in even small quantities.
Signs of an overdose include slow, or no breathing, being unable to wake a person, very small pupils, blue lips and nails and cold and clammy skin.
Naloxone can reverse the effects of opioids and help a person start breathing.
