Newfoundland and Labrador’s representative in the federal cabinet believes the ten-year objective to end homelessness in Canada is achievable – but acknowledges that it will be a challenge.
That lofty goal was laid out in the budget Thursday night and St. John’s East MP Joanne Thompson met with the media in St. John’s yesterday to discuss its impact on this province.
The fisheries minister has a lot of experience in the field, having been the executive director of The Gathering Place before venturing into politics.
She says, finally, we have an integrated, comprehensive approach where health care and mental health supports are clearly linked.
“Once you begin to roll out those truly integrated supports, you start to turn the corner and people receive the comprehensive care that they need in that moment,” says Minister Thompson. “And then you start to see results – I saw that in the community when we would continue to add supports. We were able to measure the outcome and it was tangible.”
