The federal government is reporting success with attempts to recruit more personnel to the Canadian Armed Forces, with more than 7,300 people having signed up to join the military over the last year.
Defence Minister David McGuinty says that’s the highest recruitment intake in Canada over the last 30 years, and surpasses recruitment targets for the period.
“It means the Canadian Armed Forces saw over 44,000 verified applications to join the regular force. That is a 62 percent increase in verified applications from the previous year. Of the 44,000 who have applied, we have enrolled more than 7,310 new members – our target was 6,957.”
McGuinty admits the recruitment target set for the coming year is ambitious, but he’s optimistic.
“For the year ahead, our objective is to enroll approximately 8,200 new members. It’s an ambitious target, but it is one we believe is achievable.”
He cites changes made to help streamline the recruitment and application process.
