The Trans Canada Highway in the Appleton / Glenwood area has reopened after being closed in both directions for a while today. Slippery roads resulted in a transport truck going off the road near Transmitter Hill but traffic is now flowing freely again.
RCMP advise that road conditions across much of central Newfoundland and the west coast are very poor due to ice and intermittent snow.
They’re asking drivers to slow down and drive with extreme caution.
On the Avalon Peninsula, the problem is water buildup and hydroplaning although there has also been some freezing rain.

The Trans Canada Highway is closed in both directions near Appleton and Glenwood due to a second vehicle off the road near the bridge.
A transport truck got stuck and was blocking the westbound lane near Transmitter Hill earlier today.
Several vehicles are off the road near South Brook.

The freezing rain is starting to accumulate on the Avalon Peninsula, leaving trees and surfaces with a coating of ice.
Water is building on roads, leading to a chance of hydroplaning.
Walkways and decks could be slippery with a layer of ice.
Meanwhile, snowfall is the order of the day on the Burin Peninsula and through central Newfoundland.
Roads are snow covered and slippery. A tractor trailer is currently blocking westbound traffic on Transmitter Hill near Gander.
More vehicles are either stuck on the TCH, or off the road near South Brook. The lanes remain open, but drivers are being advised to delay their travel as conditions deteriorate.
