The Registered Nurses Union has launched a new public campaign seeking what it calls safe staffing in the province’s health care system.
“Safe Staffing Saves” encourages Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to contact their MHA to call for greater funding to help “stabilize the nursing workforce and improve access to care.”
The RNU says government is conducting an assessment of nursing staff needs for the first time in 40 years.
Union President Yvette Coffey says safe staffing – that is having the “right number of nurses, with the right skills in the right places” – is what makes a healthcare system reliable.
The union is calling for staffing levels that are modern and based on evidence, as well as stronger supports for nursing students.
That includes paid clinical placements to help government build a “stable, sustainable workforce for the future.”
