There are just hours to go before the tax filing deadline.
Taxes for 2025 have to filed with the Canada Revenue Agency by midnight tomorrow, April 30th, or the filer faces possible penalties.
Melanie Kavanagh, the local team leader at CRA, says as of mid-April more than 16.1 million Canadians had filed their returns, but she acknowledged many will wait until the last minute.
“Sometimes there’s a hesitancy to file if you owe money or have a balance, but that’s why everyone should file by the deadline,” says Kavanagh.
Many programs such as the Canada Child Benefit and GST credit are based on the information in a tax return, so someone who misses the deadline could see a lapse in their benefits.
