Ceremonies marking the anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic take place this weekend in St. John’s and Conception Bay South.
It’s the 81st anniversary of the longest battle of WWII as the Allies fought for control of the North Atlantic.
Canada’s Merchant Navy lost 70 ships and 1,700 lives, and the Royal Canadian Air Force lost 900 aircrew.
The Royal Canadian Navy destroyed or shared in the destruction of 33 U-Boats and 42 enemy surface craft. In turn, it suffered 2,210 fatalities and lost 33 vessels.
Sunday’s ceremony in St. John’s takes place at the National War Memorial on Water Street starting at 10:50 while Conception Bay South will gather at the Monument of Honour at 10:30. A ceremony is also planned for Bell Island.
