The mother of a young man who was badly beaten in an incident in St. John’s earlier this week is urging the provincial government and the justice system to take the proliferation of drugs, violence and repeat offences that are leaving the community in fear very seriously.
Kayla Wiseman had dropped her 19-year-old son Brady off to visit an old friend, only to get a call a few hours later from McDonald’s on Topsail Road that she never expected to get.
“And I said, ‘that’s weird, McDonald’s is calling me,’” assuming that her son’s phone had died and he needed to be picked up. The worker then told her that her son had shown up at the restaurant after being beaten with chains by a group of about 10 people.
She tells VOCM News that she immediately went into a panic and called her parents while rushing to the restaurant.
“My mom and dad got there before I did,” says Wiseman, “and while I was on the way, my mom called me and said ‘it’s bad Kay,’ and I said what do you mean it’s bad? And she said ‘they whipped him with chains and everything my dear,’ she told her. ‘They did a number on him.’”
Her son was hospitalized and is now recovering at home.
She credits area MHA Keith White for reaching out and raising the issue in the House of Assembly this week. Wiseman says she will fight to make sure that rising drug-related crime and violence is addressed adequately in the justice system.
