The PC government continues to dismantle multi-million dollar projects initiated by the previous Liberal government – the latest two cancellations “blindsiding” a town on the west coast and one in Labrador.
The contracts for the construction of a new school in Cartwright, and the redevelopment of the Martin Gallant Building in Stephenville Crossing, have been cancelled following a detailed review of both projects.
Government says the development of the old college in Stephenville Crossing is 19 per cent complete, while a new school in Cartwright, Labrador is six per cent finished.
It says a review of the projects found risk of cost escalation, delays and design issues.
Premier Tony Wakeham cancelled plans for a multi-billion dollar hospital at Kenmount Crossing shortly after coming to power.
MHA for Cartwright L’Anse au Clair Lisa Dempster told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that nothing other than a new school is acceptable as the town is 210 km north of its nearest neighbour.
She says the 60-year-old building is plagued with electrical and safety issues, is not accessible, and has no parking lot.
“You talk about trying to recruit and retain teachers to come into the north, well you can’t expect them to come into a dilapidated building falling down,” says the Liberal MHA.
The decision is being met with disappointment and even anger in the communities involved.
The mayor of Stephenville Crossing says awarding work for a new courthouse gave the region a boost.
Now, Lisa Lucas says her community feels “dismissed.” She says council is “committed to securing” the community’s economic future and will “fight” to ensure the commitment is honoured.
