Officials at Memorial University say they are “very excited and proud” to see the replica of the Danger Tree that they created unveiled at Beaumont Hamel.
The replica, which was created by MUN’s Department of Technical Services, was unveiled during a ceremony in France today.
The original tree was used by members of the Newfoundland Regiment in during World War I to indicate direction and exposure to enemy fire. During the Battle of the Somme, many Newfoundlanders lost their lives nearby.
Andrea Warman, project manager for MUN’s 100th anniversary, says it is an “exciting day…to see the project come to fruition during the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, and the 100th anniversary of MUN. It has truly been the most rewarding and special project we’ve had the pleasure to be part of.”
