Pledging greater co-operation in defence and technology, the President of France and Prime Minister Mark Carney met in Saint Pierre et Miquelon this afternoon, reinforcing Canada’s efforts to diversify its trade relationships.

Emmanuel Macron and Carney spoke warmly of the relationship and history between Canada and France, in a setting less than 20 km from the tip of the Burin Peninsula.
It was the very first visit of a Canadian Prime Minister to Saint Pierre et Miquelon, the last remaining vestige of French presence in North America.
In a joint news conference held this afternoon, both leaders highlighted the fishery, Arctic security, AI development and regulation, sovereignty, climate change and critical minerals as areas of mutual interest and concern.
