Further details on the affordability measures announced yesterday are now emerging.
Government is knocking 15 per cent off our electric bills, one of two steps taken yesterday to reduce the cost of living. The other involved an increase in the oil heat subsidy to $1,000 from $500.
Finance Minister Craig Pardy told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that the electricity break, which applies to the first 2,000 kilowatt hours of usage each month, will cover consumption in December, January, February and March.
“We looked at it as a winter affordability to bridge those months until the Churchill Falls agreement,” said Minister Pardy.
Newfoundland Power, whose task it is to deliver the rebate, says bills will include a line with the rebate as a credit. No application is required.
