The Public Service Alliance of Canada is sounding the alarm after receiving notice that 534 positions could be cut at the Canada Revenue Agency.
It comes as some 500 Parks Canada employees received similar notice this week.
The PSAC says the cuts mean that families, seniors, students and small businesses looking for support “will instead be stuck with longer wait times, delays in accessing resources” and frustrating interactions with chatbots.
PSAC President Sharon DeSousa says CRA workers “are already overworked and understaffed” and cutting more jobs isn’t going to improve service.
The latest notifications bring the total number of PSAC members who have received workforce adjustment notices to more than 18,000 – 1,400 of whom work at CRA.
