The scam we told you about yesterday with Stephenville RCMP being impersonated by fraudsters is also contaminating other units of law enforcement.
It’s a cross-Canada telephone scam in which the number showing on the screen matches the line from the law enforcement unit in question.
In this case, the RNC say they have received numerous reports from people living outside the province who were called from 709-944-3405, a number formerly associated with the Officer in Charge of the Labrador City detachment. The person on the other line indicates that police have someone in custody and proceeds to provide direction in an attempt to gain further information from the recipient.
RNC say once a call goes down this road, terminate the contact and call them at 709-729-8000 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre 1-888-495-8501.
