The executive director of the Bell Island Mine Tour and Museum feels vindicated after regulated work on the Number 2 Mine proved that the popular tour was safe.
The mine tour had to go virtual last year after government regulations stipulated that work be carried out on the shaft.
It was determined that the mine was well kept, but, there was room to improve the visitor experience, and they were able to purchase tags and tracking systems for visitors through donations.
Teresita McCarthy stresses that the reason the mine tour was shut down last year was not because of safety concerns.
“I guess the relief is in knowing that what we knew from the beginning was true. And we had people in the industry who came in, they validated what our board knew all along. We had been open for 28 years at that point and everything had been as it should be. We are bringing people in from all over the world and we want to be one million percent sure that where we take them is as safe as where they left.”
