Newfoundland Power is warning about the dangers of tampering with electrical equipment after break-ins and theft at substations in Gambo, Hare Bay and Greenspond.
The damage at the substations, which was discovered yesterday morning, led to power outages affecting more than 250 customers.
The utility says such activity can lead to injury or death to the perpetrator, and creates risk to employees, contractors and the general public.
More often than not, the thieves are after copper wire for the black market.
