The Premier has committed to an “independent and comprehensive” audit of all materials related to the Innu presence in what is now Labrador being held in the Provincial Archaeology Office.
The Innu Nation recently raised concerns about how their archaeological record was being interpreted, forcing the cancellation of Expo Labrador earlier this summer.
The Innu say an exhibit to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day did not reflect their understanding of Innu history and presence in the region.

Premier Tony Wakeham met Friday with Innu Nation Grand Chief Jodie Ashini and Deputy Grand Chief John Nui to discuss the matter and build “a positive relationship going forward.”
The premier committed to completing an audit of all Provincial Archaeology Office holdings to identify and assess all research completed in the province regarding the Innu’s presence in Labrador.
He also confirmed that the Grand Chief will be provided with complete access to the materials.
