The recreational fishery officially closes today, marking the end of a historic season.
The fishery opened back in July under a new seven-day-a-week model for most parts of the province. The expansion was granted following a healthy return of cod stocks—something not seen in decades.
However, not all areas were included in the expanded season. Parts of the west and southwest coasts were left off the list due to ongoing concerns over low stock numbers in that region.
Ottawa says it will re-evaluate the numbers throughout the winter ahead of next year’s fishery.
