VOCM is celebrating an auspicious anniversary.
It was 90 years ago today that VOCM Radio hit the airwaves for the very first time on October 19th, 1936.
Call letters starting with VO pre-date Newfoundland joining Confederation with Canada, and were allowed to be retained under the Terms of Union.
Founded by Joseph L. Butler and Walter B. Williams the station started out with a 100 watt transmitter broadcasting from Parade Street in St. John’s for 4 and a half hours a day.
Butler passed away in a plane crash in 1954 while searching for a lost child, and the business passed down to his son Joseph V. Butler.
VOCM moved to its present location on Kenmount Road in the late 1960s.
Since its inception, VOCM has been a trusted news source, bringing the latest news and information – both good and bad – to generations of listeners across the province and around the world.
Now owned by Stingray, VOCM broadcasts to an even wider audience digitally, and online though vocm.com.
