Government Services Minister Mike Goosney says homelessness is a top priority for him and he plans to ensure that homelessness is not an issue in the metro region.
Goosney, the former mayor of Deer Lake, was responding to questions from NDP member Shielagh O’Leary.
The NDP wants housing prioritized in the upcoming budget.
O’Leary asked if the minister would “commit to rent caps and vacancy controls so that people are not forced into homelessness as a result of excessive rent increases?”
Goosney says he’s working on solutions. “When I walk around this city, you know, it’s a little embarrassing I’ll say, because I wasn’t here, but when I was a municipal leader in my home town, I made sure there was no homelessness, and you know what? Now that I moved here, I’m going to make sure there’s no homelessness, and I’m here to work with my colleague to make sure that doesn’t happen under my watch.”
