A Burin Peninsula farmer wants to know what is happening with a local cold storage facility originally built to store vegetables.
Andrew Warren of Warren’s Family Farm in Winterland has been growing commercially for the last two years and admits, it’s been an uphill battle.
He says the local cold storage facility was established in the 1980s by the Agricultural Society of Winterland to help store locally-grown produce.
Warren is the area’s only new commercial farmer to set up in the region in the last few decades, yet, he says, he’s being pushed out.
He was notified of the change in a phone call last week.
“I was given no real explanation other than they might sell the building, they might do renovations, they don’t know what they’re doing.” He told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan. “Whatever it is they’re doing, they don’t want…us there to do it.”
Warren posted pictures to the farm’s Facebook page showing snowmobiles, pallets and wood stored in the facility which was originally intended for vegetables.
“Hopefully, it’s going to be revamped for vegetable storage,” says Warren. “We all know the situation we’re in as a province; I mean, Marine Atlantic only ran three trips last week I believe, and as a province we’ve got about seven to ten days’ food supply.” He says if the main issues are not addressed “then we’re in big trouble.”
