Last year, the region saw some of the lowest water levels in history after a dry spring and summer. This year, potential flooding is the issue.
Deer Lake Power is opening its spill gates today to deal with some of the highest water levels the town of Deer Lake has seen in decades.
Water levels around the Humber River and Deer Lake are expected to rise over the next week, so the Kruger-owned power company is opening the gates at the main dam to release water from the Grand Lake Reservoir after a week of rain and snow filled it.
The town is asking residents to stay away from riverbanks, shorelines and fast-moving water.
