Two teenagers are in custody after an elderly woman was accosted in a parking lot in St. John’s and robbed of her purse and vehicle.
The incident happened at 1:00 pm on Tuesday on a parking lot on Topsail Road in the west end when a man approached the 82-year-old woman and took off with her purse and vehicle.
She suffered minor injuries.
The RNC located the stolen vehicle on Pitts Memorial Drive with a male and a female inside. They flashed the lights and sounded the siren, but the pair ramped up the speed. Officers chose not to pursue but they located the abandoned vehicle a short time later with a 17-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl nearby.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the boy had stolen gasoline from a store in Goobies earlier in the day.
The boy faces the bulk of the charges including flight from police, theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of same, while the girl has been charged with dangerous operation and being party to the offence.
Further charges are anticipated.
The accused were held for a court appearance.
