The Connors and Newhook Elite Hockey Camp is cutting up the ice in CBS.
The camp, which is in its second year, was created by local PWHL player Maggie Connors who wanted to provide young female athletes with opportunities that she didn’t have growing up.
Connors says it was a few years ago that she started crafting the idea for the camp, but it was something she had always thought of growing up and playing hockey in St. John’s. It finally came to fruition three years ago.
“When I was younger there wasn’t a ton of female opportunities, especially in terms of camps being coached by an all-female staff,” Connors says.
This year, Connors partnered with another local PWHL player, Abby Newhook, to run the camp together.
Moving up from an assistant’s role last year to co-owner of the camp, Newhook says their goal is to “put girls’ hockey on the map here in Newfoundland.”
Newhook says the camp acts as a way to expose the next generation of young athletes to what hockey is like at the pro level.
The Connors and Newhook Elite Hockey Camp runs until Sunday.
