Today marks the start of National Drowning Prevention Week.
It’s a time to remind people about safe practices when around the water, whether that be while swimming or out in a boat.
Boating safety is of particular concern this year as more people are out on the water to participate in the expanded recreational food fishery.
Boating safety officer Sharon Sellars says the number one rule is never to go out in a boat while impaired.
“And that goes for everyone on board.” says Sellars. She says one-third of all boating fatalities involve alcohol, so the best chance people have for survival is to be sober and to be wearing a life jacket.
