The RCMP stopped several drivers throughout the province last Thursday for excessive speeding. Police clocked one of those vehicles at more than double the speed limit.
According to police, the most egregious instance happened on Witless Bay Line. Just after 7:30 Thursday night they stopped a vehicle for going 107 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The driver, a 47-year-old man from Brigus, was also found to have an expired license and no insurance. He was ticketed for the infractions, and his vehicle was impounded.
The RCMP stopped several other vehicles for excessive speeds throughout the day.
Just after 10 a.m. officers in central were passed on the TCH by an SUV travelling 155 km/h in a 100 km/h zone, and two hours later police clocked a driver going 148 km/h in an 80 km/h zone along the Bay d’Espoir Highway near the intersection with the TCH.
The first driver was from Corner Brook and the second was from New Brunswick. In both cases they were ticketed and their vehicles were seized.
Meanwhile, around noon the RCMP received a report of a dangerous driver who had a near-miss, nearly causing a collision, on the TCH near Glenwood.
In that instance, the driver was ticketed for passing when it was unsafe to do so.
