First Light has released its 2026 Reconciliation Report.
The report, titled ‘The Sound of Our Footsteps,’ was released just ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Relational Connections Coordinator Noah Sheppard says the last report was released in 2024, and in the last two years there have been some “big wins.”
That includes the opening of the Harvey House transitional housing facility, and the grant they received from the department of health to support their Indigenous Health clinic – which is slated to open soon.
While there has been progress made, Sheppard says there are still many “barriers” that need to be addressed, the biggest of which is education.
He says the K-12 system is “lacking” in terms of how it represents and teaches students about Indigenous peoples.
Sheppard also highlights the need for greater access to safe and secure housing.
