The provincial government is laying the blame on the liberals for “not listening to their constituents” regarding the new school in Kenmount Terrace.
Original plans a couple of years ago called for the school to accommodate kids inside and outside the sprawling subdivision but that has been changed drastically to allow only children from the Terrace.
Mount Scio MHA Sarah Stoodley presented a petition in the House of Assembly yesterday asking why government is restricting the catchment zone.
“Friends that students have gone to school with for years are now going to be separated,” Stoodley.
“I’ve had parents tell me that they are afraid to tell their children what will happen in September. I implore that government review the options, and grandfather in students as they are doing with the new high school in Portugal Cove-St. Philips for kids going to PWC.”
Education Minister Paul Dinn says the physical space allows for about 200 fewer students than the number declared by the previous government.
“We inherited a school that was over 60 per cent complete, and can accommodate 850 students – not the 1058. You cannot squeeze that many students into a school that was built for 850, so you have to look at catchment zones. It’s the only option,” said Minister Dinn.
