The RNC’s media relations officer believes there have been “significant changes” in mental health supports since she joined the force, both for officers and for the public.
This is Mental Health Awareness Month.
Constable Steph Myers says all officers have been trained “heavily” in mental health, including their Mobile Crisis Response Team – which she calls a “key” part of their frontline response.
“We respond to some of people’s worst days that they’re going through. And part of this team is to help people through those days and work through it and provide resources during these crisis situations. So again, we’re able to provide discreet mental health support using those unmarked vehicles, which is better for the person in crisis. It removes that stigma. Sometimes people don’t wanna talk to the police, even though they truly do need our help. So this allows us to better help the public.”
