The provincial government is assessing the province’s shipbuilding capacity in an attempt to fulfill its election commitment to construct new ferries.
Master Mariner Kris Drodge says any effort to expand shipbuilding capacity in the province is welcome news.
He says there are a couple of possibilities, with a number of industrial sites that could potentially fit the bill.
He says Bull Arm, NewDock and Marystown are among the top contenders.
In the meantime, Drodge says growing shipbuilding capacity goes beyond industrial space.
“You are going to have to go out and try to get those trades back into the province in order to build up capacity in that region. Whether that be transient, whether that be camp-based, or whether it be actually taken…from the local communities around the yard, that would have to be determined.”
