A report by the Auditor General of Ontario on the use of Artificial Intelligence has found the province’s AI strategy lacking in “many key components.”
The audit found that Ontario Public Serve staff were accessing “unsafe and unsecured AI websites,” creating risks of potential unauthorized data exposure.
Only 3 per cent of public service staff in Ontario completed training on the responsible use of AI, which was not mandatory.
Ontario AG Shelley Spence also found that AI Scribe used to take notes for doctors on patients were not being adequately evaluated.
She cited AI “hallucinations” – whereby information was made up or treatment suggestions were made that were not provided by the doctor – in addition to incorrect, and incomplete information.
Spence found that 11 of the 20 approved companies offering AI services to the Ontario government did not submit any third-party audit reports, and that a comprehensive evaluation of vendors was not conducted to ensure that their AI Scribe systems mitigated the risk of bias.
