The proposed construction of a new breakwater in Petty Harbour has been submitted to the provincial government for environmental assessment.
DFO is proposing to construct a 120-metre rock breakwater on the east side of the marina in Petty Harbour which would include a 230-metre extension to the town’s effluent pipeline.
The work will allow the town’s sewer outfall to emerge on the seaward side of the breakwater.
Construction would be carried out from the southern side of Petty Harbour and would require an access road to be built east of the marina that will hug the shoreline, with access behind the fish plant.
While the road is intended to be temporary, it may be more cost-effective to leave it in place.
The deadline for public comment is June 26th with the minister’s decision due by July 5th.
